Progress with ITTF Coaching Qualification
Final preparations are being made for the final ITTF Level 1 Coaching Course for 2011. It
is being run in Christchurch from November 16th to 20th by OTTF Development Officer, Scott
Houston. TTNZ Development Committee member, Grant Wilson is
co-ordinating, with around 20 coaches expected. The participants include some from the
North Island who were unable to attend earlier this year. TTNZ is committed to developing
coaching resources nationwide, and qualifying people to support initiatives throughout the
country.
The goals for 2012 are to confirm a Level 2 course later in the year, and to complete
Level 1 assessments for all 2011 course participants. TTNZ thanks Pub Charity for their
donation allowing assessments camps to be run in Palmerston North and North Harbour for
participants from the earlier course. These camps also provide valuable opportunity for
developing players to receive tuition under expert guidance, and have been a great
success. Congratulations to the following ITTF Level 1 Coaches for completing their
qualifications at the two assessment camps:
Eberhard Kleiser, Albert Cheng, John Lee Kuoch and Eddie Coleman, Matthew Ball,
Natalie Paterson, Stew Hickford, Depak Patel, Raewyn Young, Tim Seaholme, Stephen Hirst,
Jason Poon.

In January, twenty-one coaches from throughout New Zealand had already attended an ITTF
Level 1 course in Palmerston North.
ITTF Level 1 is the first level officially recognised by ITTF. To become fully qualified
the coaches have to complete 30 hours coaching practice after the course.
Within the 30 hours coaching practice, an ITTF Course Conductor (or their appointee) must
supervise five hours. This supervisor/assessor evaluates each coach.
Six coaches went through this part of the accreditation process on the weekend of June
18-19 in Palmerston North.
As always, Shona Cudby from Table Tennis Manawatu provided great support,
organising the hall and a coaching camp. Manawatu and Wellington Junior players of
contrasting levels attended the camp. The group was prepared for interesting sessions run
by very motivated coaches.
The coach assessor had an interview with each coach and they were given a topic for
their session. Each coach had to prepare a session plan and run a 90 minute
coaching session, followed by an analysis of that session.
Coaching a new group of players was a challenge. But after a nervous start for some the
new coaches did a great job, spending hours to prepare well run and exciting sessions The
weekend was a success for coaches and players.

ITTF Level 1 Coaching Course a great
success
21 coaches from throughout New Zealand attended a most successful ITTF Level 1 course over
the weekend in Palmerston North. The course was the 4th Level 1 course to be held in NZ
with previous courses having been held in 2005, 2006 and 2008. A 5th course is planned for
Christchurch in November of 2011 when Oceania Table Tennis Federation Development Officer
Scott Huston is making an official visit.
Such is the success of the ITTF Level 1 structure since its inception that by the end of
2011 New Zealand would have had over 100 coaches attending one of the courses in this
period. |

|
| There is now very strong interest in
having a first ever ITTF Level 2 course in New Zealand or Oceania in 2012, once coaches
have met their remaining requirements of 30 hours coaching and 5 hours of supervised
coaching. With New Zealands sports coaching structure having undergone a massive
restructure of the past 10 years we were fortunate indeed that the ITTF coach education
structure came along as it did, and was so closely aligned to the change to athlete
focused, coach driven approach to coaching of sport.
Course presenter was John Stapleton, assisted by Tim
Seaholme (Sports Science expert).
