LIEBHERR 2011 ITTF - Oceania
Cup - TV Broadcast For the first time in many many moons Table Tennis will be
on TV in New Zealand on Sky Sports 2, broadcasting the LIEBHERR
2011 ITTF - Oceania Cup.
It may not quite be Prime Time TV, but we need all Table Tennis people to support us by
switching it on. This will ensure we can help the product to grow. Win further support of
the TV network Sky TV and in the future hopefully improve our allocated time slot and
increase the amount of table tennis that will be on TV in New Zealand. Its important for
our future growth of the commercialization of table tennis in the region and New Zealand.
Especially given that Karen Li won the Women's Singles event, it
will be very good viewing for all New Zealanders.

Palmerston North for Senior
Nationals
Table Tennis New Zealand confirms Table Tennis Manawatu as the new host for the
2011 Senior Nationals, which will be held in Palmerston North. TTNZ is committed
to providing a quality tournament, to be enjoyed by everyone who wishes to be involved. We
are reassured by the huge efforts of Steve Paterson, Shona Cudby and the rest of the Table
Tennis Manawatu team in making this possible at short notice. The 2011 North Island Champs
are testimony to their ability to put on a great event.
The original dates of 12th to 16th October remain unchanged. We hope to see you
there, and endorse the following statement from Table Tennis Chairperson, Steve Paterson:
"Table Tennis Manawatu (TTM) is pleased to have been selected as the replacement
venue for the 2011 Senior Nationals. TTM recognises the disappointment which is being felt
by those in Canterbury who are no longer able to fulfil their dream of hosting the event
in their City this year. However TTM believes it is important for NZ table tennis that the
senior national event is staged at the time originally scheduled and has therefore offered
to fill the hosting gap.
Ideally TTM would like to have had a longer lead time for it to plan a successful event
but in the circumstances that was not possible. By agreeing to host the event TTM is
exposing itself to some financial risk. This risk will be mitigated by having a large
number of registrants.TTM Chairperson Steve Paterson urges everyone to demonstrate support
by registering as early as possible. TTM is determined to make the event a success and the
stay in Palmerston North a memorable one."

Board Appointment
TTNZ welcomes Malcolm Lowe from Auckland to the Board. Malcolm is
appointed to the vacant position, which falls due for election by virtue of rotation at
the 2011 AGM. Doctor Lowe and his wife, Jenny continued a tradition of supporting their
sons' international debuts for New Zealand by travelling with our Junior and Cadet squad
to Guam earlier this year. |

Tremendous Win for Karen Li
in Adelaide
Hearty congratulations to Karen Li for her win in the
prestigious Oceania Cup in Adelaide. After a hard-fought win over Miao Miao in the
semi-finals, Karen took the first three sets in the final over Jian Fan Lay and closed out
4-2. This result was obtained after an intensive preparation programme with Karen's sister
and coach Li Chunli. It means that Karen will be representing New Zealand
at the Women's World Cup.
Phillip Xiao made the semi-finals in the mens event, where he went down
to Robert Frank. John Cordue, Kevin Wu, Sarah Her-Lee and Jenny Hung all
reached, and exited at, the quarter-finals.

Update on Nationals
Table Tennis Canterbury has withdrawn it's bid for hosting at Christchurch, after extended
negotiations on contingency measures. TTNZ is currently endeavouring to finalise
arrangements for a North Island venue, to the same timetable. This venue, and new entry
form will be confirmed as soon as possible. (4 July 2011)
Feedback Requested on Nationals Hosting
The article below has been viewed as implying that the Table Tennis Canterbury Tournament
Management team needed to have the responsibility of hosting the 2011 Senior Nationals in
Riccarton, Christchurch taken away from them. This is not the case. The stated intention
was to relieve them of what we believed would be a huge workload and commitment through
challenging and uncertain times. In contrast, the TTC team has responded emphatically that
they are totally comfortable with continuing to host the event and are well prepared for
it.
Table Tennis Canterbury has made request for reinstatement of the Senior Nationals to
Christchurch, on the existing timetable. Associations have been asked to indicate their
position, to allow an informed decision to be made, and subsequently publicised by TTNZ.
John Lea, Executive Director, (23 June 2011)
Venue Change for Senior Nationals
It is with regret that we must cancel arrangements to hold the Senior Nationals in
Christchurch from October 12th to 16th. Members of the Canterbury table tennis community
have many important things to deal with on a personal level, and are not helped by the
uncertainty regarding preparations for this event. We must support them by relieving them
of both this burden and the potentially tough choices lying ahead.
We also acknowledge that the rest of our administrators, players and their families may
also be forced to make tough decisions if we do not take action promptly.
We have been investigating options for staging the event at another venue in the same
time-frame. This requires assembly of an experienced tournament management team at very
short notice, and an economically viable package to present and attract strong support.
Unfortunately, there is no compelling option due to the timing of the event falling
between the Quarter-finals and Semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup. Gillies Avenue is a
leading contender, but the RWC greatly constricts the availability of affordable
accommodation, and influences flight availability and traffic congestion. Other Auckland
venues are affected to a lesser degree.
There is a possibility that the event is postponed, quite possibly with a condensed
timetable. But, the concern here is that postponement into November will interfere with
examinations for many of our prospective entrants. Movement into January may be a
possibility.
Associations are being canvassed for viable proposals and feedback on what they can
support. TTNZ will endeavour to assist with funding applications for travel costs arising
from a decision. We are hopeful of promoting this decision by late June.

Day 1: Thankfully, the fourteen-person New Zealand squad arrived safely in their
cosy Hobart apartments before ash-driven flight disruptions could impact. But, it did not
take long for the challenges to begin......
Day 2: Our women and our men's B team must have felt like those chosen to
make the initial assault on Gallipoli! Surrounded by Aussies since entering the contest
two days earlier, they have continued to face a barrage of heavy fire from the opposing
guns. But, such a challenging start will have left them battle-hardened for the less
daunting assaults remaining in their campaign........
Days 3-4: Following a baptism of fire our three teams have improved their
standings on the ladder on the third and fourth days of the tournament .......
Days 5-6: These two days have provided a number of successes for our 11
players in Hobart..............
Day 7: The New Zealand squad now returns home after a week full of
testing matches. There have been a number of good results......... (19/6/11) |

TTNZ Appointments
To reaffirm our commitment to our stakeholders TTNZ is empowering a series of skilled
individuals to assist our efforts in key areas:
TTNZ Development Committee
Grant Wilson (Canterbury), Stephen Hirst (Wellington)
and John Tuki (Bay of Plenty) will form the new TTNZ Development
Committee, supporting Development Manager, John Stapleton (North
Harbour). They will provide support for both regional initiatives (as per Stephen with
North Taranaki) and special interest initiatives (as per John with PARA).
TTNZ Tournaments Committee
Alan Moore (Canterbury), Shona Cudby (Manawatu) and Tim
Seaholme (Manawatu) will reconstitute the TTNZ Tournaments Committee.
Their combined expertise will be used to review TTNZ tournament reports, and to provide
policy recommendations and interpretation rulings for matters pertaining to all TTNZ
tournaments. This will initially assist the Executive Director to align TTNZ Handbook
regulations, other published rules and guidelines, policies formally adopted in principle,
and tournament entry forms. Thereafter the goal is to make appropriate recommendations for
delivery of tournaments which provide the greatest level of satisfaction for both
participants and volunteers.
TTNZ Website & I.T. Team
Board Member, Mandy Burt will oversee development of the new Sportsground
website and associated databases. A team is being assembled to support Christine
Young and John Lea in creating and running the new website and

encouraging, and the full team, with their functional responsbilities should be confirmed
before the end of June.

History Chronicle TTNZ is
pleased to advise that the history chronicle project at http://www.ttnzchronicle.org.nz is now
complete, with 75 years of pages. The information has been meticulously researched and
carefully written and edited by John Kiley from annual reports,
magazines, "50 Years Across the Table" book by Ken Wilkinson and large numbers
of press cuttings and scrapbooks from the earlier years. The web site has been compiled by
Robin Radford. All care has been taken, but the authors would be pleased
to hear of anything that may need amending, and particularly additions to the history of
NZTTA/TTNZ.
We are indebted to both John and Robin for their huge efforts over such a long period.
They have provided the table tennis people of New Zealand and their families with a legacy
that can stir enormous pride and happy memories for a very long time. Please pass the word
on to those who might enjoy it!

ITTF Level 1 Coaching Course a great success
21 coaches from throughout New Zealand attended a most successful ITTF Level 1 course over
the weekend in Palmerston North. The course was the 4th Level 1 course to be held in NZ
with previous courses having been held in 2005, 2006 and 2008. A 5th course is planned for
Christchurch in November of 2011 when Oceania Table Tennis Federation Development Officer
Scott Huston is making an official visit.
Such is the success of the ITTF Level 1 structure since its inception that by the end of
2011 New Zealand would have had over 100 coaches attending one of the courses in this
period. |
 |
|
There is now very strong interest in having a
first ever ITTF Level 2 course in New Zealand or Oceania in 2012, once coaches have met
their remaining requirements of 30 hours coaching and 5 hours of supervised coaching. With
New Zealands sports coaching structure having undergone a massive restructure of the
past 10 years we were fortunate indeed that the ITTF coach education structure came along
as it did, and was so closely aligned to the change to athlete focused, coach driven
approach to coaching of sport.
Course presenter was John Stapleton, assisted by Tim
Seaholme (Sports Science expert). |

Plenty Happening in the Bay
The Otumoetai club was proud host to a well-received group coaching session on Saturday,
January 22nd. Several years after losing the majority of interclub players over one
summer, there are signs that Tauranga table tennis is finally moving ahead with
enthusiasm.
In recognition of this renewed interest John Tuki arranged for
Auckland-based coaches, Feng Jie and Josh Alexandre, to
attend Friday club night and present a coaching session the following day. Jie and Josh
are both ranked at 12 nationally, and were great role models for the players and
spectators. |
 |
|
There was a wide age range in the dozen course
participants, with the youngest being just nine. Everybody put in a big effort,
particularly in the warm-ups! We hope that this is just the first of many gatherings that
will spark the enthusiasm of the committed, and attract the interest of many more.

gusto. There was a wide age range in the dozen course
